Book Arts Music
Musical Worlds: New Directions in the Philosophy of Music by Philip Alperson, A state-of-the-art collection of essays in philosophical thinking about the practice of music. This volume, reproducing a special issue of The Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism on "The Philosophy of Music" (Winter 1994) with a revised introduction and two new articles, is distinguished by its breadth of content, diversity of approaches, and clarity of argument, which should make it useful for classroom teaching. The topics covered include musical representation, the expression of feeling in music, the metaphysics of operatic speech and song, musical understanding, musical composition, feminist music theory, music and politics, music and racial identity, music in non-Western cultures, and the ontological implications of recording technology for rock music. The approaches used are philosophical, historical, social and political, feminist, and ethnomusicological. The book includes discussions of a great many styles and historical periods of music, from ancient Greek music and music theory to instrumental and operatic music in the Western classical tradition, Persian music, music of the Blackfoot Indians, rock and the blues, and the avant-garde compositions and performances of John Cage.
Gamelan Gong Kebyar: The Art of Twentieth-Century Balinese Music with CD (Audio) by Michael Tenzer, The Balinese gamelan, with its shimmering tones, breathless pace, and compelling musical language, has long captivated musicians, composers, artists, and travelers. Here, Michael Tenzer offers a comprehensive and durable study of this sophisticated musical tradition, focusing on the preeminent twentieth-century genre, gamelan gong kebyar. Combining the tools of the anthropologist, composer, music theorist, and performer, Tenzer moves fluidly between ethnography and technical discussions of musical composition and structure. In an approach as intricate as one might expect in studies of Western classical music, Tenzer's rigorous application of music theory and analysis to a non-Western orchestral genre is wholly original. Illustrated throughout, the book also includes nearly 100 pages of musical transcription (in Western notation) that correlate with 55 separate tracks compiled on two accompanying compact discs. The most ambitious work on gamelan since Colin McPhee's classic Music in Bali, this book will interest musicians of all kinds and anyone interested in the art and culture of Southeast Asia, Indonesia, and Bali.
Book music - Book Music is the European version of making mechanical music medium for organs in Europe and it is actually similar to piano rolls, but book music is produced by thick cardboard, with perforated holes, and it is presented and played in a folded zig-zag style. Paper rolls were never popular in Europe, so the book music was an instant standard of perforating arranged music. World of Music, Arts and Dance - World of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD) is a festival started in England in 1982. The festival arose from Peter Gabriel's interest in sharing and celebrating world music, arts and dance. HarvestMoon Music and Arts Festival - HarvestMoon Music and Arts Festival is an annual two-day music show situated in Edmonton's Hawrelak Park. Dozens of Christian heavy metal artists come and send loud music across the park. Community Arts Music Association - The Community Arts Music Association (CAMA) of Santa Barbara is the oldest arts organization in Santa Barbara, California, USA.
